Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen:

Update 2015.10.16: Per George Frayne (commander cody):
In 1973 we bought an old greyhound (55 chevy) from the company in Nashville
It said ‘Toledo’ on the destination sign, which we removed and replaced with “Ozone”.
We used it on the back of our second album that year.

In 1975 we upgraded to a different bus and sold the old girl (“honeysuckle rose”) to Hoyt Axton for $5000.
From what I know it wound up a residential unit somewhere in Southern California.

Here’s the album cover image:

Then they sold her to Hoyt Axton, (September 1983, per (RJ Long) who gave her a paint job:

and then wrote this song about her:

“Then they sold her to Hoyt Axton, (September 1983, per (RJ Long) who gave her a paint job:”

That date is wrong. I played a show with Hoyt in Wichita Falls, Texas in June of 1980, and he was touring in this bus (with the same paint job) then. During his set he even joked about getting it from Commander Cody, and about how he’d gone over it with a straw to collect up any “white powder residue” the band might have left behind. He was really proud of that bus, and invited my band aboard to check it out. Of the 200-plus touring “stars” I played shows with during the 80s and 90s, he had the ONLY Scenicruiser among them. Everyone else either traveled in Silver Eagles or MCIs. Just thought I’d mention that.
